Guide to OHS Safety Signs

Published 11 April 2021

Safety signs (or OHS Signs) play an essential role in keeping you and your team safe in the workplace. From mine sites, construction sites, manufacturing facilities and more, safety signs are critical in making people aware of possible dangers, critical instructions or important information. That’s why it’s so important to make sure your signs are highly visible, durable and will withstand the test of time and environment.

All safety signage must meet the AS 1319:1994 standard in Australia so it’s important to source your safety signs from experts who will make sure you get the right signs for your application.

To help you select the correct signage for your application, we have provided a guideline to safety signs below:

Size Guide

Safety signs visual guide

Signs should be large enough to view without straining the eyes when communicating safety messages to employees and/or visitors. Therefore, choosing the size of a sign is more than fitting it to the space you have available.

In order to comply with AS 1319, you must consider the environment, lighting and viewing distance – these factors will determine the size of sign required to suit your application. The recommended minimum sizes as per AS 1319 are as follow. For a pictogram and worded sign in a factory or work environment, where lighting is good and the sign will be mounted in a reasonably prominent position.
